Maciej Toporowicz. “Baby Gap”1994”. Fourteen photographs with silkscreen.
Baby Gap is a set of photographs taken in Bangkok in 1996 at the Baby House for children whose mothers died from AIDS. Most of the children are HIV positive and they face an uncertain future. The logo used on all the photographs is a simulated logo for the Gap Kids line of clothes. The gap itself is a symbolic discontinuity. The doors are shut for these kids before they can be open. This double gap creates a multilayer of opposites, dead and alive, poor and rich, fortunate and unfortunate.
